Several hundred people marched Saturday afternoon through the Lloyd District in Northeast Portland for a rally against funding cuts to social and public services.

Though the protest was mostly peaceful, at least 20 people were pepper-sprayed by police, apparently because of the route they were attempting to march along.

The Portland Police Bureau said in a news release Saturday that the event did not have a permit and organizers did not respond to requests about discussing the intent of the march. There was one arrest, and police said they used pepper-spray after demonstrators used wooden shields to directly confront police officers.

Free speech events don’t require a permit, but marches on public streets do require a city permit, the police news release said. Police declined to comment further.

“Occupy Wall Street” campers have made Halloween at a church in lower Manhattan simply too scary, church officials told FoxNews.com.

Citing an “abundance of caution,” Rev. James Cooper of Trinity Church said the Episcopal parish at Broadway and Wall Street in Manhattan has canceled it popular Halloween activities due to safety issues arising from a sidewalk encampment in front of the place of worship.

“Canceling a beloved family event is not a decision taken lightly,” Cooper said in a statement issued Sunday. “Last year, more than 1,200 people took part. However, we are deeply concerned about the escalating illegal and abusive activity the camp presents.”

Linda Hanick, a spokeswoman for Trinity Church, said nine people have been arrested in connection to the encampment in the past two weeks, including a man who was arrested after he put an air horn to the ear of a longtime maintenance superintendent at the church on Oct. 11. The maintenance worker was “traumatized” by the incident, she said.

Eighty-eight people out 10,000 isn’t much… unless it’s the leading edge of a new and more potent phase of the Occupy movement. At least that’s the thought that crosses our mind with the Wal-Mart strike.

You haven’t heard about it?

You’re not alone.

The Wal-Mart labor strikes since they began a week ago today. They made The New York Times yesterday… on page B2.

Why do we care?

Entertainment value: Major labor unions are backing an effort called “Making Change at Wal-Mart,” a company that’s successfully kept unions at bay throughout the company’s 50-year history. Those 88 workers who walked out Tuesday are spread across 28 stores in 12 states.

Organizers sent 200 employees to WMT’s shareholder meeting in Arkansas yesterday, demanding an end to the company’s attempts to “silence and retaliate against workers for speaking out for improvements on the job.”

Billed as a protest against the war in Afghanistan, protesters smashed the windows of banks, businesses and BMW’s along their route. Marchers also smashed glass doors at City Hall.

The march began around 7pm at Frank Ogawa Plaza and was over by 8:30pm. In the interim, marchers moved down Franklin Street and broke windows at a Chase Bank and a California Bank.

From Breitbart

Almost as quickly as the Occupy Unmasked film was released, Andrew Breitbart’s expose on the Occupy Wall Street movement, liberal critics began to attack the film’s honesty. Many claimed the film was inaccurate for portraying the movement as revolutionary in nature and prone to violence. Code Pink’s Medea Benjamin attended an advanced screening of the film and denounced it as “dishonest” for portraying the movement and its leaders as violent or driven by anything other than bettering the lives of Americans.

The mainstream media support of the Occupiers, Barack Obama’s “sympathizing with their frustration,” and Nancy Pelosi’s “applauding them for their spontaneity,” was a difficult time for those of us actually covering the movement. We saw it for what it was; a revolutionary effort to overthrow the US Constitutional government and shatter our economic system. We knew the “peaceful” portrayal offered by mainstream outlets didn’t jive with a movement we knew supported the use of violence.

Late September brought a breakthrough as the CUNY Grad school hosted a panel of Occupy leaders and strategists. The panel, appropriately named “Occupy Tactics: Violence and Legitimacy in the Occupy Movement and Beyond,” featured some of Occupy’s foremost strategists identifying themselves with global and foreign revolutionary movements. The primary focus of the panel was the debate between “a diversity of tactics” vs non-violence. Perhaps the most telling aspect of the discussion was that all speakers believed in the justification of the use of violence. The debate was not about the morality of violence; it was about whether violence was an appropriate revolutionary tool at this particular time in the movement.

A judge in Cook County, Illinois on Thursday dismissed over 90 cases against Occupy Chicago activists on the grounds that they violated the First Amendment of the United States Constitution.

Judge Thomas Donnelly declared that the city’s park curfew law that was used to arrest activists in Grant Park last October was “unconstitutional both on its face and as applied and all complaints in this case are dismissed with prejudice,” according to the Chicago chapter of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG).

“The Occupy Chicago demonstrators were subject to constantly changing rules and regulations that ended in a directive that they had to be constantly moving in order to protest,” the judge explained in his 37-page opinion (PDF). “Viewed in isolation the rules and regulations appear reasonable, but viewed in the larger context of the Occupy movement’s presence in Chicago, they give rise to the inference that the City was attempting to discourage this particular protest.”
